Thursday
The Dietz family, German immigrants, moved to the Rockridge area of Oakland after the big San Francisco earthquake, as did many other people looking for more solid ground! Around the house you will see that many of the walkways were built using cobblestones from San Francisco. The Dietz family loved to garden and planted the beautiful white wisteria when the house was built. Originally, the French doors from the living room opened out onto a balcony, now onto a patio. Also, matching French doors in living room opened onto a balcony facing San Francisco. Later families replaced these with a picture window.
While the home was being built, Mr.Dietz and his family moved back to Germany where he worked as a taster for coffee roasters. Their grandson, Richard Dietz, lives nearby in the Elmwood area of Berkeley. He and his family have revisted the home a few times. Rick shared with me his family photos of the home being built and when his grandparents lived here. We plan to scan and upload these photos when he returns from Switzerland.
We bought this home twenty years ago. Every family who has ever lived here has loved this lovely place.
Come and enjoy!
